Ghana to host Africa in 2018 Armwrestling championship

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), on Tuesday, launched the 9th Africa Armwrestling Championship dubbed “Accra 2018” in Accra.

The championship, fixed for Thursday 26th – Sunday 29th July this year, would see Accra as the host city with over 15 other countries, participating.

Ghana was awarded the rights to host in 2017 after beating Morocco to the bid.

Mr Charles Osei Assibey, president of GAF, speaking at the launch said, it was a great opportunity for the country to host such an event.

He said GAF was happy with the numerous advantages the championship would bring to them and the nation as a whole.

“The GAF since its official inauguration by the National Sports Authority as the 40th Federation in September 2016, has strategically used its mandate to deepen its developmental agenda, increase participation, raised the profile of the sport, attract sponsorship and participate in international competitions.

“We at GAF, through the support of Corporate Ghana and direction of the National Sports Authority have influenced the growth by making it the fastest growing and the most talked about sports in Ghana apart from football today,” Mr Assibey said.

He added that hosting the tournament was among other things, going to serve as a means to increase the interest of the sport in the country.

“We are beginning a course that would expand the growth and influence in Ghana, Africa and beyond. We took up the challenge because we want to encourage participation by Ghanaians and Africans. ”

The 2018 Africa Armwrestling championship would be held under the slogan, “Team work makes the Dream”.
