Declare your assets if you earned over GH¢3,727 – Auditor-General

Daniel Y. Domelevo

Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo, the Auditor- General, has said public servants who earned GH¢3,727 and above are required to declare their assets and liabilities to the Auditor General.

He said Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution required that, all public office holders were supposed to declare their assets and liabilities before assuming office and should be repeated after every four years and when leaving office.

“The problem is that, many public officers think assets and liability declaration is for politicians only, yes politicians are supposed to declare their assets, but public office holders are also required to do so”

The Auditor-General made the disclosure at the Eight Annual Accountability Lectures and Launching of the 2017 Audit Financial Year of the Ghana Audit Service in Accra,
The event was on the theme: ‘’Protecting the Public Purse- Our Commitment towards Ghana’s Development Agenda’’.

The objective of the Accountability Lecture is to whip up the need to incorporate the principles of integrity, transparency, probity and accountability in the management of public funds in national discourse towards the achievement of the national development goals.

Mr Domelevo said: “For instance, if you should declare your assets today, my staff will have to see the form and also authenticate your signature against what is in your passport, driving licence or any other acceptable form of identification’’.

The A-G said the Declaration of Assets and Disqualification Act, 1998 (Act 550), required that, persons including Presidential Staffers and Aides, Managing Directors, General Managers, and Departmental Heads of Public Corporations or Companies in which the State had controlling interest were supposed to declare their assets.

Mr Domelevo said the Audit Service had started modernising the assets and liabilities declaration scheme, noting that, there was the need to develop an information technology platform to facilitate the declaration process.

He said the platform would help in verifying the assets and liabilities declared and report those who failed to comply with the directive to the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for the necessary action.
