Overcome complacency, power can trick you – Kufour

Former President Agyekum Kufuor has cautioned members and supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) against complacency and being discriminatory.

“Power can trick you”, he said, when he addressed the national delegates conference of the party in Koforidua.

He asked that they held together and avoided doing anything that would create cracks and division in the party.

They must share a common vision and accept to swallow individual egos for the common good, he added.

He reminded everybody that they needed to forge a solid and united party to deliver prosperity to the country.

Over 6,000 delegates from across the 275 constituencies gathered at the Koforidua Technical University to elect new national officers to lead the party in the next four years.

Former President Kufuor gave high marks to the government and said it was making good progress – building a more resilient economy and rolling out social interventions to make life better for the people.

Good governance in terms of democracy and economic progress, he noted, had been moving together in tandem.

Mr. John Boadu, the acting General Secretary, in his report, highlighted the strengthening of party-government relationship – deepening the engagement.

here needed to be strong political communication to ensure that the grassroots did not become detached from the government.

He added that resources should also be made available to the constituencies so that they would be more vibrant.

Mr. Boadu told the delegates that elections had been successfully held in all the 29,000 polling stations and 274 constituencies.

Adenta was the only place they were yet to hold election to pick the constituency officers.

Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, cautioned against  internal bickering and squabbles, triggered by the conduct of elections at all levels of the party.

That, he said, had not been helpful and should not continue.
