DCE appeals for residents to practice waste segregation
Residents of the Asunafo South District in the Brong-Ahafo Region have been implored to begin waste management from their respective homes by separating the organic biodegradable from the inorganic non-biodegradable waste prior to the dumping sites.
Mr Osei Bonsu, the District Chief Executive (DCE), made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Abromamu in the District, during a tour of some dumping sites where the District Assembly and the Waste and Allied Services, a subsidiary company of the Zoom Lion Group of Companies were clearing away ‘mountains’ of waste.
Other communities that benefited from the exercise were Achiase and Nobekaw.
Mr Bonsu said the primary objective of the tour was to sensitize the people to keep their environment clean, stressing that the waste segregation would help to reduce the volume of refuse hauled to the dumping sites significantly.
He urged the public to desist from littering the environment indiscriminately and also support the waste management companies and government to keep the environment clean to rid the villages, towns and cities of filth.
Mr Bonsu suggested the need for a policy to ensure the use of biodegradable shopping bags to reduce if not total ban, the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags to save the environment.
He noted the support of the populace for effective management of solid and liquid waste, which would among other benefits contribute to making the water bodies clean to get quality water for various purposes.
Mr Kobby Mensah, the Assembly man for Abromamu Electoral Area appealed to his fellow Assembly men and women to collaborate with other stakeholders, especially youth groups and court the support of the traditional authorities to undertake regular clean up exercises in the communities.
