Court grants CEO bail over alleged fraud

An Accra Circuit Court has granted a bail in the sum of GH¢56,000.00 with three sureties to the Chief Executive Officer of the Sonzel Shipping Company.

He was alleged to have defrauded a businessman of his Toyota Corolla in addition to GH¢25,000.00 under the pretext of clearing his Mercedes Benz car from the Port.

The Court ordered that two of the sureties should be public servants earning not less than GH¢1,000.00.

Frank Osei Assibey has denied the charge of defrauding by false pretence and he will make his next appearance on October 22.

Police Inspector Mabel Atsu told the Court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Essandoh that Ernest Twum, a businessman is the prosecution witness, living at Ashongman, a suburb of Accra and Assibey’s Company was also located in Accra.

In November 2017, Twum’s mother, who is abroad shipped a home-used Mercedes Benz to Ghana to be cleared by him.

A witness in the case introduced Assibey to help Twum clear the said car, Inspector Atsu revealed.

She said the accused person charged GH¢56,000.00 to enable him clear the car from the port.

The Prosecution said, Twum, then offered his Toyota Corolla saloon car valued GH¢31,000 in addition to a cash of GH¢25,000.00 for the transaction.

Assibey after receiving the money, failed to fulfil his part of the bargain and a report was made to the police leading to his arrest.

He promised using his Hyundai Sonata car as collateral to secure loan to settle the debt but to no avail.
