STMA secures €3m to implement project

The Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has secured a Three Million Euro fund from the European Union to implement its sustainable partnership project with the City of Palermo in Italy.

The project, dubbed the “Twin cities in Sustainable Partnership Project” is a three-year project to promote Integrated Urban Development through Partnerships built among local authorities.

It would address challenges in Urban development, capacity building and scaling up of long-lasting partnerships and cooperation through peer-to-peer exchanges.

Mr Isaac Aidoo, the Lead Coordinator on the Project and a Senior Development Planner with the STMA told a press conference that the project would advance the city authorities capacity to respond to perennial challenges of Urban sprawl, climate change, unemployment, poverty, exclusion and the new realities of the Corona Virus pandemic.

He said, “specifically, the project is geared towards enhancing Urban management, climate resilience, fostering transnational cooperation and boosting socio-economic development.

The project, he revealed had the STMA as the lead implementor and the Municipality of Palermo in Italy as partner to enhance multilevel Urban governance in STMA with focus on green, inclusive and culturally sensitive Urban development.

The three-year project would build the capacities of assembly staff, vulnerable groups, introduce climate resilience form of farming, youth friendly reproductive health rights centres, sanitation among others.

Mr Aidoo added that the project would ensure the formulation of climate resilience policy, disaster management plan to contribute towards enhancing sustainability.

Mr Abdul-Mumin Issah, the Chief Executive of the STMA said the project activities would be performed under the Multilevel Urban Governance, culturally sensitive and inclusive Urban strategies and Urban Climate Change Resilience.

Such expected outcomes of the projects also fell in line with the Medium-Term Development goal of the assembly of building a prosperous society, creating opportunities for all and safeguarding the natural environment.

He, therefore, solicited media support in implementing the tenets of the projects to bring the expected change in Urban governance, job creation and sustainable measures to address issues affecting the vulnerable.

The MCE said the management of the assembly was committed to utilize all opportunities to create a world class city with opportunities for its citizens.
