Minister calls for broader collaboration towards fisheries regulations
Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Wednesday called for broader collaboration between relevant agencies towards the enforcement of fisheries regulations.
“Mr Speaker, the enforcement of fisheries regulations requires effective collaboration between relevant agencies. Therefore, the Enforcement Unit consists of the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Marine Police, and staff of the Fisheries Commission to ensure that the laws are enforced,” she said.
Madam Koomson made the call on the floor of Parliament when Mr John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie, the Member of Parliament for Mpohor, asked her how the Ministry intended to empower the relevant agencies responsible for the enforcement of laws and fisheries regulations.
She said it would also ensure it provided the needed logistics required for effective and efficient operations.
“Mr Speaker, the Ministry has also been in constant engagement with the Attorney-General’s Department to ensure the prosecution of cases.
“We have assured the security personnel and warned all stakeholders that we will not interfere with any legal processes to prosecute offenders,” she said.
Madam Koomson, also the MP for Awutu Senya East, pledged the Ministry’s continuous collaboration with the appropriate bodies to strengthen and enhance the enforcement of laws in the sector.
