NPP cancels runoff between Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called off the runoff election scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, to break the deadlock between two flagbearer candidates, Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko.
This follows Mr Agyarko’s withdrawal from the flagbearer race, citing concerns over the breach of the party’s constitution.
The NPP Super Delegates Conference on August 26, 2023, was intended to reduce the number of aspirants from ten to five, however, there was a tie for the fifth position between Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko.
The runoff was intended to break the deadlock between Messrs Addai-Nimoh and Agyarko to determine who would join the four other candidates in the party’s presidential primary on November 4.
In a letter to Boakye Agyarko, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Elections Committee stated, “We take notice of your decision to withdraw from the contest, therefore the run-off election scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023, will no longer be held.”
Prof Oquaye also acknowledged receipt of Mr Agyarko’s letter dated August 31, 2023, indicating its contents had been evaluated and his concerns had been passed on to the party for redress.
Following Mr Agyarko’s resignation from the runoff election, the final list of flagbearer candidates for the November 4 presidential primary is Vice Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
