Malaria cases surge at Bomaa Government Hospital – Medical Superintendent
Dr Emmanuel Agyei-Darko, the Medical Superintendent of the Bomaa Government Hospital in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region has appealed to households to endeavour to sleep under the Long-Lasting Treated Mosquito Nets.
That would contribute a lot towards stemming the increasing cases of malaria, especially among children below five years in the area.
Dr Agyei-Darko indicated that remained a huge disease burden in the local communities and regretted that instead of the people sleeping under the nets supplied by the government, they used them to fence their farms and gardens to ward off stray animals.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr Agyei-Darko expressed worry that malaria had become a disease burden at the hospital, a referral facility, saying, until the people slept under the nets and kept their surroundings clean too, it would be difficult to eradicate the disease.
He said all the communities at Bomaa and its adjoining settlements were forest fringe communities, adding that that was also another major contributing factor leading to the surge in malaria cases.
Nonetheless, Dr Agyei-Darko said the government through the Municipal Health Directorate was doing everything possible to bring the cases of malaria and urged the people to prioritise their health too.
In a related interview, Dr Solomon Owiredu Boateng, the Medical Superintendent at the Yamfo Health Center said malaria and respiratory infections remained the topmost diseases recorded at the facility for years now.
As a mining town, with the Newmont Ahafo North Project, Dr Boateng advised parents to ensure that they and their children always wear nose masks to avoid inhaling dust and other substances.
