GRA Customs Division seizes weapons and ammunitions concealed in suitcases
The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has seized a cache of arms concealed in three different suitcases in a 40-foot container at the Golden Jubilee Terminal.
Brigadier General Zibrim Bawa Ayorrogo, Commissioner Customs Division, told a media briefing that Customs officers discovered 53 pistols, 74 magazines and 65 live ammunition during an intrusive examination of the container declared to contain vehicles and personal effects from the United States of America.
He said the firearms, magazines and live ammunitions were seized and the agent and consignee representative arrested but granted bail pending further investigations.
“The non-declaration and concealment of the firearms, magazines and live ammunitions amounts to smuggling and concealment of weapons in contravention of section 138 of Customs Act 2015,” he said.
He said all other items in the container were thoroughly examined, and detained for further investigation.
Brigadier General Ayorrogo urged importers requiring importing firearms and ammunition into the country to obtain a licence or permit from the Ministry of Interior prior to their import, adding that importing without requisite licence was an offence.
He said smuggling of weapons and ammunitions posed a significant threat to national security and public safety.
“Such illicit activities fuel criminal enterprises, escalate violence, and endanger innocent lives. Engaging in the illegal importation of arms and ammunition is also a criminal offence punishable by the laws of Ghana,” he said, adding the Customs Division remained resolute and vigilant to counter all such illegal activities to ensure public safety.
He lauded the diligence and professionalism of the Customs officers and all associated security agencies whose vigilance led to the successful detection and seizure of these weapons and ammunitions.
Meanwhile, the Rapid Response team of the Customs Division has received a pick-up vehicle and computers from SIC Insurance PLC to enhance operations.
