General Electric to provide technology in $400m Ghana water rehabilitation works

US firm, General Electric (GE) is to provide technology and equipment for a $400 million water project in Ghana.

The deal was signed between the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the US government, contractor of the project, Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) last week.

The project is to upgrade and rehabilitate the national water system in Ghana and it is financed by the US Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank) with ECC and GE [both from the US] as well as Ghanaian contractor, Engineering and Logistical Services Limited as partners.

The contract signing ceremony which took place in Accra was witnessed by the Outgoing US Ambassador to Ghana, Donald Teitelbaum and Mr Kweku Awotwi, Managing Director of the GWCL.

The contract spans eight main regions of Ghana and the ECC in a statement says “The technology being provided by GE will give the GWCL the ability to improve performance and product quality by reducing operating costs and by extending equipment life in areas where clean water distribution is limited or restricted.”

Richard Ebel, ECC Vice President said “This effort will provide state of the art technology from GE to the highest priority areas of need through a partnership between our team and the Ghana Water Company Ltd.”

The project is set to begin this year and is scheduled for completion in 2018, ECC said.
