Poverty is reducing in Africa – Dr Westcott

Dr Nicholas Westcott, Managing Director for Africa, European External Action Service has observed that poverty is reducing in Africa and that the implementation of the Millennium Development Goal five is gaining its status.

He said Ghana and Africa at large was building a dynamic relationship in trade in partnership with the European Union (EU) countries.

Dr Westcott was speaking at an interaction programme under the theme: “Africa and the EU: Moving Forward or Time for Change” organized by the EU Delegation in Accra on Friday.

He said the EU was encouraging African countries to promote three policies in their countries which were Economic, Political and Diplomatic Cooperation with the EU and the world at large.

Dr Westcott noted that Ghana was full of business and entrepreneurs and that concrete financial structures needed to be put in place and ensure that businesses were adequately supported with credit facilities.

He said the EU had a dynamic intention to partner with all African countries in areas of economic, and diplomatic development.

Dr Westcott said the EU was also looking out for peace, prosperity and good partnership with Africa and the world at large.

He said the EU would continue to support Ghana and other African countries financially to construct roads, build infrastructure, improve agriculture and build other sectors of their economies, and urged African leaders to be accountable to their people.

Ambassador Claude Maerten, Head of EU Delegation in Ghana thanked the participants for co-operating with his outfit .
