Forest Research Institute starts Masters Programme in natural resources

The Forest Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) has begun a Master of Science degree programme in Bio-Economy and Natural Resources Management (MSC ECORES) and Business Administration at its Kumasi campus.

The programme, being done in partnership with University of Eastern Finland (UEF), is operating on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and combines both e-learning (online) and face-to-face lectureship, leading to the award of MSC degree in natural resources management and an Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree after two years of study.

Dr Dominic Blay, the Coordinator, said the goal was to train scientists, leaders and innovators of diverse backgrounds to apply scientific and management skills to promote sustainable management of the nation’s forest resources.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), after a meeting of the faculty members and the first batch of students, that the commencement of the programme was a dream, come true and that given the ageing faculty of research scientists in the country, there was the need to design innovative ways to train and retain young graduates to fill the vacuum.

He said the programme would help to provide the requisite human resource for both scientific research and business management to help manage our forest.

Dr Blay encouraged young graduates to take advantage of it to have better appreciation of issues affecting the environment.
