Zoomlion to employ 1,500 youth in Northern Region
Zoom Alliance, a subsidiary of the Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a leading sanitation company in the country would employ 16,000 unemployed youth all over the country with 1,500 of them from the Northern Region.
The initiative is largely in tandem with the vision of the company in promoting clean, green and healthy communities in the country to deepen the good sanitation agenda to ensure a healthy environment.
Mr. Joseph Ayuboya, Acting Northern Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited announced this in Tamale on Saturday, during the regional launch of the National Sanitation Taskforce, in response to a national programme launched earlier by the President.
He said the task force would go from door to door to educate Ghanaians about sound environmental and sanitation practices, helping in waste collections, desilting choked gutters and evacuating heap of refuses till December 2012.
Mr. Ayuboya called for the unflinching support and cooperation of all stakeholders in the sanitation industry to ensure the successful implementation of the three month project, stressing that, the task force would not be working in isolation but with expert advice, monitoring and supervision.
He urged the various MMDAs to review and enforce sanitary bye-laws in their jurisdictions to compel people to keep the environment clean and appealed to the judiciary to apply strict penalties in cases of sanitary offences.
Alhaji Haruna Friday, the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, who launched the task force expressed government’s commitment towards improving the sanitation situation in the country and called on the people to contribute their quota.
He observed that Ghana is one of the cleanest countries in the world and appealed to the task force to demonstrate patriotism in carrying out their job.
Miss Martha Tia-Adjei, Acting Northern Regional Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer said access to sanitation in Ghana was just 14 per cent; a situation she indicated was worrying, noting that, the country was targeting 54 percent to meet the MDGs.
She expressed worry that 73 percent of the people in the region were defecating in the open due to the absence of latrines and implored the people to adhere to good sanitation practices.
