Eye affliction among Ghanaians rising

Rev Benjamin Bankas, Director of the Life for the Living Medical and Humanitarian Centre, has said the number of Ghanaians living with serious eye afflictions was far more than could be imagined.

The centre is a Ho-based Charity with special interest in tracking and tackling eye afflictions among the disadvantaged.

Rev Bankas said cases detected at screenings during the charity’s outreaches over the years were progressively going up.

He said the situation of many of these people, could degenerate into blindness.

Rev Bankas was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday, on the third day of another five-day special eye screening exercise in Ho.

He said out of the 62 people screened on the first two-days, 18 people had eye problems.

He said four of the 18 had pterygium rpt pterygium, five suspected glaucoma and referred to the Volta Regional Hospital for further screening and rest either cataract or minor eye ailments.

Rev Bankas said the pterygium rpt pterygium and cataract cases have been transferred to the Save the Nation’s Sight Clinic in Accra for possible surgery.

He said the special exercise team would move to Katanga in northern Volta Region in the coming week.
