Chinese firm to seek $200m loan to build NADMO offices nationwide
Ghana and the China Railway Engineering Design Institute Company Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to fund the construction of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) office complex as well as it regional and district secretariats.
The MOU between the government represented by NADMO was signed by NADMO National Coordinator, Mr Kofi Porturphy Mr Wang Jun, Director of the Chinese company, signed for his company.
Under the MOU, the Chinese company is to procure a loan of $200 million for the projects.
Mr Porturphy said NADMO offices had been established from the national through the district to the zonal levels and explained that the MOU had become necessary because a major setback of NADMO’s work was lack of appropriate office accommodation and warehousing. He said a project team would be constituted to include Ghanaians to execute the project which was expected to commence 12 months from the signing of the MOU.
Ghana formed the National Disaster Management Organisation in 1996, backed by an act of Parliament (Act 517) to manage disasters and emergencies.
This was after Ghana had responded to the United Nations Declaration 44/236 of 1989 declaring 1990 to 1999 as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR).
