Ghana gov’t establishes technology union for disabled persons

The Union of Disabled in Technology, an institution to train physically challenged persons in Information Communication Technology was inaugurated in Sunyani on Thursday.

The Union initiated by the Government in collaboration with rlg Group, a Ghanaian technology company through the Ministry of Social Welfare and Employment will train 5,000 persons with disabilities across the country in computer hardware, networking and phone repairs.

Mr Patrick Acheampong, a representative from the Ministry said in the Brong-Ahafo Region 240 persons with disabilities would be trained.

He said 113 persons with disabilties made up of 84 men and 29 women had so far been enrolled from all the Municipal and District Assemblies in the Region with the exception of Attebubu-Amanten and Dormaa East Districts.

Mr Acheampong said the biggest challenge facing the Union is accommodation.

He entreated the students to take their training serious to be self employed and help reduce unemployment among them as well as begging for alms on the streets.

Mr Kingsley Afriyie, a representative of rlg Group stressed the need for the students to take their training serious.

Mr Thomas Asare, an educationist advised them not to use the skills they would acquire for internet fraud popularly called “sakawa”

Pastor Ntim Gyemah Anthony, President of the Federation of the Physically Disabled in the Region thanked the Government for the initiative and appealed to corporate bodies, organisations and agencies to employ the beneficiaries after their training.
