Ministry congratulates women MPs elect

ParliamentThe Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs (MWCA) has congratulated women who won Parliament seats during the general election.

This was contained in a press release signed by Mr Gershon K. Kumor, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday.

“Having defied all the challenges faced by women in their quest to aspire to such elected positions, the Ministry commends them greatly.

“It is our belief that they will work assiduously to advance the work of the Legislature and in particular advance the cause of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

“We wish to also use this opportunity to commend all NGO’s and Civil Society Organisations who worked relentlessly to promote women’s participation in the elections and to have an increase in the number of women representatives in Ghana’s Parliament,” the release said.

According to the release, though the number of elected women Parliamentarians recorded a modest increase from 19 to 28 seats, representing 10.1 per cent, the “Ministry believes that we still have a long way to go as a country”.

The Ministry called on stakeholders not to relent in their efforts until they attained the 40 per cent as advocated by the African Union.

“We believe the eventual passage of the Affirmative Action Legislation, possibility next year, will address this issue,” it said.
