East Mamprusi farmers appeal for storage facilities
Farmers in East Mamprusi District of the Northern Region, have appealed to Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other stakeholders to provide them with 10,000-bag silo to overcome post harvest losses.
The Ziniaya Young Farmers League Cooperative Society (ZYFLCS) complained that farmers in the area lacked adequate storage facilities resulting in massive post harvest losses rendering their labour and investment fruitless.
Mr Iddisa Sulemana Chairman of ZYFLCS who spoke to Ghana News Agency on Friday said they urgently need a modern storage facility large enough to stock large quantities of cereals to increase their businesses opportunities.
He said the current locally built storage could only store up to 500 bags,
“This does not afford farmers the opportunity to break even since they have to sell soon after harvest at a give-away prices’, he said noting that revenue is lost, while servicing of bank loans is difficult.
ZYFLCS is a private sector business group, with membership of 247, made up of 202 males and 45 females located in Nagboo.
The group is engaged in commercial farming and also buys cereals for sale when prices are good on the market.
Mr Assani Sulemana Moses Tampuri, Business Sector Advocacy Challenge Fund Service Provider said his outfit had supported the group in its advocacy activities, particularly through training.
He called for the commitment of stakeholders to improve incomes and reduce poverty in the area.
