Ghana selected for €3.95m funding to build reliable energy database

Ghana will soon establish a reliable energy database following the award of funds by the Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP).

The project is among eight new energy initiatives in 19 selected developing countries. The REEEP said January 9, 2013 that it will fund all the 28 new projects with an amount of €3.95 million.

The energy database will be implemented by the Energy Centre of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), according to a document on the project.

The database is expected to help Ghana sustain its energy expansion.

“One of the new projects will open up energy access data in Ghana through a database populated with all relevant energy statistics. This will become a leading example of open data on the African continent,” said Martin Hiller, Director-General of REEEP.

REEEP also announced funding for a jatropha project in Ghana to be undertaken by a company known as Smart Oil.

This funding cycle for the 28 projects is REEEP’s ninth, and it was through donations from the governments of the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland.

REEEP has previously disbursed €3.2 million in 2011, €4.7 million in 2009, €3.2 million in 2007, €2.2 million in 2006 and €1.1 million in 2005 for energy related projects.
