Peace Council appeals to political parties to refrain from intimidation
The National Peace Council has called on political parties and their supporters to refrain from any acts of hostilities and intimidation that would breach the peace of the country.
Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the Council, said there were indications that the activities of activists of these parties in contention were not only deepening divisions in the society but also undermining the quest for national cohesion and unity.
Prof Asante made the appeal at a press conference to review the state of the nation’s peace and democracy since the December 7 elections and the declaration of the results of both the presidential and parliamentary elections in Accra on Monday.
He commended the leadership of the political parties for working hard to restrain and discourage their restless supporters and activists from engaging in any violent behavior.
The Council also appealed to leaders of political parties to reaffirm their commitment to the Kumasi Declaration and intensify the education of their members on the tenets of the Declaration.
Prof Asante called on them to quickly educate their members to understand the importance of the rule of law to sustaining the continuous democratic development of the country within peaceful and stable conditions.
“We call on all political parties to discourage their activists immediately from engaging in any behavior that may be construed as acts of violence or disrespectful of the independence of the judiciary,” he added.
The National Peace Council commended the Ghana Police Service for maintaining law and order and for keeping the peace during the demonstrations surrounding the judicial proceedings in respect to elections disputes.
He called on civil society organizations, traditional authorities, clergy and the public to remain vigilant and circumspect in their condemnation of all actions that threaten to put the country’s democracy, peace, stability and national unity at risk.
