Five Ashanti assemblies selected for LAP II
The Bekwai Municipal Assembly and four district assemblies in the Ashanti Region have been selected for the phase two of the Town and Country Planning’s Land Use and Management Project (LAP).
The districts are Bosomtwe, Atwima-Kwanwoma, Atwima-Mponua, and Atwima-Nwabiagya.
Mr Chapman Owusu-Sekyere, a Director of the Town and Country Planning Department, announced these at a day’s workshop, to sensitize staff and stakeholders on the project, in Kumasi.
Traditional rulers, heads and directors of decentralized department and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, attended the event.
Mr Owusu-Sekyere explained that the initiative followed the completion of the pilot phase, carried out in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality, which formed part of activities lined up to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
He said the project would prepare spatial development framework for a more efficient land market operation in both urban and rural areas, provide efficient land information system to support sustainable land management and administration.
Caretaker Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, said the goal of the project, introduced in 2003, was to stimulate economic development, reduce poverty and promote social stability through improved security of land tenure and enhance the processes for accessing land.
He praised individuals and organizations for contributing to the implementation of the LAP through out the country.
Nana Darko Montwi II, Paramount Chief of Maabang Traditional Area, said the socio-cultural and economic development depended largely on the nation’s land use, and called on stakeholders to embrace the programme.
