First phase of Dome market completed

The Ga East Municipal Assembly has completed the first phase of construction of stalls at the Dome market at a cost of GH¢101, 538.00.

The assembly used part of its share of the District Assembly Common Fund and 2011 District Development Fund to build the 72 sheds.

Mr John Kwao Sackey, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), announced these at a ceremony to hand over the stalls to traders at the market on Friday at Dome.

He advised the traders to support the assembly’s initiative to build more facilities at the market, to transform it into a modern trading centre to befit the status of the Dome community.

Mr Sackey said “The handing over and allocation of sheds vindicates the assembly from allegations that it has sold the market to a private developer.”

He appealed to the traders to dialogue with the assembly in all matters rather than resorting to demonstrations and other forms of protest.

Mrs Grace Madjoud, Estate Officer of the assembly, advised the traders to take good care of the sheds, and abide by terms and conditions governing the acquisition of the facilities.

Madam Joyce Offie, a cloth seller and a beneficiary of the sheds, commended the assembly for the gesture, and said: “We thought the assembly had sold out the land to a private developer, which would deprive us of our livelihood”.

It would be recalled that the evacuation of the traders for the construction of the sheds resulted in demonstrations by the market women, who claimed that the assembly had sold the land on which the market was located to a private developer.

Trading activities in the market momentarily came to a halt amidst jubilation from the traders when officials of the assembly on Friday went to the market to perform the ceremony.
