Cape Coast Assembly makes over GH¢10,000 from marriage registration in 2012

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) last year generated GH¢10,125 from the registration of 675 marriages as against GH¢9,735 from 649 marriages registered in 2011.

Out of the number, 556 went through the normal process of 21 days public notices whiles 119 were special cases, which took less than the 21 days notice.

Mr. Edward Steele-Dadzie, Principal Executive Officer in charge of Marriage Registry at CCMA, disclosed these to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Cape Coast on Thursday.

He said so far, this year, 90 marriages had been registered at CCMA, made up of nine special cases and the remaining through the normal process.

Mr Steele-Dadzie said the oldest couple to register their marriage last year were 82-year-old groom, and 52- year-old bride, whiles the youngest couple, were 21-year-old groom and 18-year-old bride.

He said in 2011, the oldest couple to register with the assembly was 76-year-old groom and 68-year-old bride  whilst the youngest couple were 24-year-old groom and  20-year-old bride.

Mr Steele-Dadzie said, last year’s figures was higher partly due to the establishment of many churches, which abhor promiscuous lifestyles and encourage the youth to have their marriages blessed and registered either in the law court or district assembly.

He said those whose marriages were contracted under the customary or ordinance would benefit from the PNDC Law 111/112 and the CAP/127 ordinance law in case a spouse is demised.

Mr Steele-Dadzie said it cost between GH¢15.00 and GH¢30.00  to have a marriage registered at the assembly, and encouraged all married couples register their marriages .
