Ghana’s NCA awards $18m broadband licences to three companies
The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana has awarded Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) licences in the 2500 – 2690 MHz band to three different companies.
Each of the BWA licence which spans a period of ten years was sold at a price of $6 million.
According to the NCA, the three firms – Surfline Limited, GoldKey Properties Limited and G-Kwiknet Limited, were winners of the licence award after it received nine applications.
“The Authority received nine (9) applications: five applications for paired frequency configuration of 2 x 15MHz, and four (4) applications for unpaired frequency configuration of 1 x 30MHz,” the NCA said in a statement February 14, 2013.
The Authority added; “At the end of the process, Surfline Limited and GoldKey Properties Limited each won a licence for paired frequency configuration and G-Kwiknet Limited won a licence for unpaired configuration; each licence at a price of $6 million.”
The BWA licences are intended to provide wireless broadband connectivity to subscribers.
Licensees shall be authorized to develop and operate broadband networks to provide nationwide BWA services.
The NCA says the Licensee(s) and end-users shall be allowed to employ any suitable technology of their choice to provide fixed, nomadic or mobile broadband services throughout Ghana.
