Ghana in gas import deal for power generation

Gas has not been flowing from Nigeria for several months now through the West African Gas Pipeline and Ghana is looking at different sources of getting gas to generate power. The unavailability of gas has led to the shutting down of power generating plants subsequently plunging the country into darkness.

The state-owned Ghana Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) and UK Gasol Plc affiliate, the African Power Generation Limited, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of some specific projects aimed at providing additional gas to the country.

Ghana signed the MoU to be assured of secured gas supply to boost frequent electricity supply as the country is experiencing massive power generation deficit.

Under the MoU, Gasol in a statement issued February 28, 2013 said AfGen and the Ghana Gas have proposed to “explore the establishment of various joint venture arrangements for the supply of imported natural gas, into Ghana as well as the downstream sale and marketing of gas to power generators and industrial/mineral processing enterprises in Ghana”.

“We are very pleased that Ghana Gas has agreed to explore collaboration with AfGen in a broadly defined partnership, including the importation and supply of non-indigenous gas to customers in Ghana, thereby assisting in bridging the Ghanaian gas deficit for power generation,” said Alan Buxton, COO at Gasol.
