British newspaper, the Guardian today March 8, 2013 a list of 25-woman it described as top African women achievers. Ghana’s Minister for Gender and Children, Nana Oye Lithur was number four on the list.

The Guardian described Oye Lithur as an acclaimed human rights lawyer who has strenuously campaigned for the equality of same-sex relationships in Ghana.

It continued by saying Oye Lithur’s advocacy centre, Human Rights Advocacy Centre, has been credited for helping hundreds of poor people to gain access to justice.

The rational for the list, according to the Guardian was to celebrate women as the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD).

It asked people to name women from across the continent who they feel deserve recognition.

First on the 25-woman list was Malawian President Joyce Banda, followed by wife of Nelson Mandela, Ms Graca Machel, a renowned humanitarian and activist.
