Electrical cables connecting 38 households in Ashanti Region stolen
Electrical cables worth thousands of cedis that connected more than 38 houses to the main high tension poles in Amoawi, Adiembra and Ampabame, suburbs of Offinso in Ashanti, were on Wednesday disconnected and stolen by thieves.
The thieves also ransacked several homes and took away electrical equipment including mobile phones and other personal effects.
Mr John Wiafe-Akenten, Assembly member for the area, who led newsmen to inspect the affected houses on Thursday, said the thieves took advantage of the power failure in the area for two days caused by heavy rainstorm in the Offinso Municipality and embarked on the nefarious act.
In recent times, he said, thieves have been pestering the residents and that several household items have been reported missing or stolen.
Mr Wiafe-Akenten said a neighbourhood watch committee has been inaugurated by the Offinso Municipal Police Commander to beef up security in the area to help stem the situation.
The Assembly member, however, appealed to the police to intensify its night patrols in the area while urging the residents to be vigilant.
Mr Wiafe-Akenten called on the residents to help the police by informing them of any suspicious person in the area.
