Equip Agona Swedru MTTU – Transport Unions
The Executives of Transport Unions at Agona Swedru have appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to equip the Swedru Divisional Police Command of Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU)
This it said would enable the police to conduct effective patrol duties on the Kasoa, Winneba and Apam Junctions Highways, which had recorded serious accidents in recent times.
The executives said their investigations had revealed that the MTTU police at Kasoa, Winneba, Apam and Agona Swedru Divisional MTTU Command have no means of transport and other logistics to discharge their duties effectively.
Mr Kwame Ketseaba, Swedru/Accra No 4 branch Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Agona Swedru.
He was commenting on the recent spate of accidents on Kasoa-Winneba Junction-Apam Junction-Cape Coast Highways.
He said because the police lack transport, the MTTU personnel are not able to patrol the highway, giving recalcitrant drivers the chance to misconduct themselves.
According to the Mr Ketseaba, the MTTU lack speed guns to check over speeding and other traffic offences which contribute to the carnage on the trunk road.
Nana Yaw Fayah, Central Regional Chairman of the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) also expressed worry about the spate of accidents in the Central region, especially on the Kasoa/Winneba / Cape Coast Highway.
He suggested that the MTTU be well resourced, to enable the Swedru Divisional Command of the MTTU to deploy more personnel on the road especially on weekends.
Nana Fayah said most of the drivers give their vehicles to “spare” drivers on weekends and that most of them do not have licenses and are inexperienced.
He cautioned drivers to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations governing the profession, adding that, the duty of the driver is to send passengers to their destinations safely.
When the GNA contacted a top Official of MTTU Divisional Police Command at Agona Swedru he said the command sometimes had to rely on PROTOA executives at Agona Swedru for transport to conduct their patrol duties.
