Ghana urged to draw lessons from business world

The role and contribution of entrepreneurship in domestic, regional and global economic development cannot be overemphasized.

In view of this, countries that aspire to accelerated growth have been urged to draw useful lessons from the business world as they strive to enhance economic prospects in a world which is fast advancing.

Speaking at the launch of the 2013 Commonwealth Day celebration in Accra on Monday March 11, 2013, the Minister for Foreign Affairs & Regional integration, Honourable Hannah Serwa Tetteh said entrepreneurship is what is required at all levels of society to leapfrog out of the current global economic downturn, which has affected a wide spectrum of global stakeholders.

Entrepreneurial giants like Microsoft, Apple and Ghana’s own Tetteh Quarshie have made significant contributions to both national and global economic development, she added.

According to Tetteh, government’s commitment to the development of entrepreneurship was amplified when President Mahama launched the GH¢10 million Youth, Jobs and Enterprise Development Fund in the recent State of the Nation address.

The Commonwealth Day is celebrated throughout the 54 Commonwealth of Nations every second Monday of March since 1977.

The Commonwealth Day  is celebrated to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth to improve the lives of its two billion citizens. This year’s celebration was under the theme: “Opportunity through Enterprise”.

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative Regional Coordinator, Africa Office, Mina Mensah urged the youth to rekindle their entrepreneurial spirits in order to serve as agents of change.

Speaking exclusively to ghanabusinessnews.com on the sidelines, the Chairman for the occasion, renowned Lawyer, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto of Sam Okudzeto & Associates, said the celebration is an important reminder for all of us to appreciate the concept and origin of our constitution, “we need to go back to the Commonwealth to find out where they originated”.

In a message to all members of the Commonwealth, the Queen of England admonished all to think about what can be gained with a bold heart, dedication, and teamwork.

On her part, the Representative of the Commonwealth High Commissioner in Ghana who doubles as the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ms. Joanna Adamson asked all members to reflect on the values of the Commonwealth.

A debate competition between Accra Academy and Accra Girls Senior High School was organized to on the day. The debate which was won by Accra Girls Senior High School was on the motion “It is the duty of government to tackle developmental challenges and not the citizens.”
