Stephen Appiah laughs off MLS link

Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has said that reports linking him to Major League Soccer made him “laugh very loud.”

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Appiah’s representatives have been exploring the prospect of him continuing his career in the U.S. in Major League Soccer. D.C. United and FC Dallas are the teams interested in a deal.

The midfielder is a free agent after being released from his contract at Turkey’s Fenerbahce, and there is interest in his services from AC Milan, Tottenham and Portsmouth.

Apparently, the MLS connection was news to the player himself.

“I have truly not heard this particular rumor about the MLS,” said Appiah to Ghanasoccernet. “I have been linked to all the clubs in the world, but this one makes me laugh very loud.”

The dig at MLS was unmistakable.

“I am 28 today and I have a lot to offer for top European clubs and that’s where I will plan to continue my career,” Appiah went on. “This is not to underestimate American soccer, because they have made important strides, but this report is stretching things a little far.”
