Ghana’s NADMO to pioneer Africa’s web emergency operation centre
Mr Kofi Portuphy, National Coordinator of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Monday said the organization was the pioneer in Web Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) in Africa.
He said that achievement was made possible through a collaboration they had with the North Dakota State Partnership Programme (NDSPP) last year and pledged the Organization’s preparedness to share that knowledge with other Africa countries.
Mr Portuphy said this in an address read for him at a 10-day training workshop in Incident Management System General Training, and Training of Trainers workshop organized in collaboration with the NDSPP in Accra.
The training workshop would train 15 personnel drawn from the NADMO, Army, Police Service, CEPS Division of Ghana Revenue Authority and other security agencies in incident management system to prepare the country towards any natural and man-made disasters.
Mr Portuphy said the partnership between NADMO and NDSPP started in 2009 and commended them for their continuous support, adding “we at NADMO have every confidence that by the end of this programme our skills in Disaster Management, would be further enhanced”.
Ms Christiana Edmund, the Chairperson for the occasion, said in recent years the world had witnessed many complex disasters ranging from natural and mandate disasters to humanitarian crisis, and Ghana was no exception, as it had its fair share of disasters.
She said all those disasters including the recent Allied Air Plane crash and the collapse of the Melcom Plus at Achimota that claimed about 14 lives and injured a lot of people called for preparedness for future disasters.
She said the country was very much at home with the experience and professionalism NDSPP brought to bear on their activities and expressed the hope that within the two-week period of interaction, they will be able to rub shoulders with them in the area of National Incident Management.
Major Craig S. Hillig, Regional Bilateral Affairs Officer, US Embassy and the leader of a 15-member delegation from the United States Africa Command (US-AFRICOM), said he was looking forward for a fruitful training session.
He said the aim of the workshop was to make Ghana the hub of incident management on the continent so that other African countries would learn from their Ghanaian counterparts.
