Golden Star Resources to resettle over 2500 residents of Dumasi

Over 2,500 residents of Dumasi in the Prestea-Huni Valley District affected by the operations of the Golden Star Resource Limited, Prestea/Bogoso Mine, would be compensated and resettled.

The legal representative of the community, Mr Akwasi Gyimah-Bota, told journalists that the Resettlement Package Agreement was signed on February 21 between the Dumasi Resettlement Negotiation Team and the mining firm.

Some facilities in the resettlement package include over 800 housing units, community centre, health centre, police station post, classroom blocks, churches and mosques and water reticulation system.

Mr Gyimah-Bota said socio-economic and assets surveys were conducted by the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency and all the necessary state agencies before the Resettlement Agreement Package was arrived at.

He said an Implementation and Monitoring Committee (IMC) had been constituted to ensure that the resettlement package is implemented to the letter.

The Chief of Dumasi, Nana Kwabena Oppong I, appealed to the mining firm to employ the youth in the area since their farms and other sources of livelihood had been captured by the company’s concession.

Mr. Atta Sarpong Kumankomah, the Construction Site Manager for the Dumasi Resettlement Plan, said the mining company had cleared the site for the project and engineering works were underway.

He said the project would be completed in 18 months and appealed to the residents to exercise restraint.
