Gov’t urged to reduce water wastage

water-2Abibiman Foundation, a Tema-based Non Governmental Organisation that promotes livelihoods and development has called on government to ensure that the right steps are taken to prevent the wastage in the usage of water.

It said water is a key natural resource for human existence and that government should ensure that Ghanaians are provided with safe and clean water.

Mr Kenneth Nana Amoateng, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, made the call in a statement to mark this year’s World Water Day.

It said water resources “are our life-line for survival, and for sustainable development in the 21st century.”

The statement said water and sanitation should contribute significantly to the realisation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which could be achieved by 2015.

It said the MDGs include the reduction of poverty, the promotion of gender equality, the reduction in child and maternal mortality and the provision of universal primary education.

The statement said World Water Day calls for sober reflection on a fundamental human need and access to such resource.

It said climate change and population growth associated to changing consumption patterns, especially in cities was the main driving force in the demand for water.
