Parks and Gardens appreciates increase in budgetary allocation

GardensMr. Nantogma Adam, the Director of Parks and Gardens, has praised the government for increasing their budget allocation by a 1,000 percent to ensure the Department executes its operations effectively.

“We are very grateful to the President for this budgetary allocation which has placed the Department on its right footing to deliver and we promise to do so without excuses,” he said and pledged that the Department would utilize the money judiciously to produce results.

Mr  Adam said this on Tuesday when the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment, Mr Akwasi Opong-Ofosu, visited the Department as part of his tour of departments under his Ministry.

He said the Department, established in 1988, is responsible for the development of the nation’s landscape and the preservation and beautification of the environment but it had not been able to function well due to inadequate resources.

Mr Adam said the Department has only two 25-year-old tipper trucks, a mower, a 24-year-old water tanker and one used pick-ups for operations in Accra, Kumasi and Aburi. The other regional capitals have no means of transport.

Mr. Akwasi Opong-Ofosu expressed his unhappiness about attitude to work at the Department despite their numerous challenges.

He said the Department seemed to have been relegated to the background although it has a huge potential that should be exploited.

Mr Opong-Ofosu said the Department was vital in the environmental and sanitation management and needed to be supported.

He also visited the Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Peduase Lodge.
