St Dominic Hospital inaugurates Endoscopy Unit

The St Dominic Hospital at Akwatia has inaugurated an Endoscopy Unit to facilitate investigations, confirmation of diagnoses and giving treatment for some ailments.

The items were donated by the hospital’s partners in Germany at the cost of 40,000 Euros.

Mr Daniel Bempong, the Hospital Administrator, said the Endoscopy Unit would provide very useful services which would complement the existing clinical services in the hospital and also attract referrals from all over the country.

He said the introduction of the endoscopy services added the hospital to the list of few institutions in Ghana which provided such services.

Mr Bempong said for years to come, St Dominic would not only be the biggest mission hospital, but also a pace-setter in offering modern and state-of-the -art services.

In an address read on his behalf, Mr George Adjei, Executive Director of the Ghana Health Service, said apart from using the endoscopy to diagnose conditions in the gastrointestinal tracts, it could also be used to confirm and treat such conditions and could also serve as disease surveillance machine for other disease conditions.

He said the unit was going to be a blessing to a huge population in the region because that equipment was scarce in Ghana and that the few available were even centered in Accra and Kumasi.

Mr Adjei said bringing that service to the doorsteps of clients was one of the surest ways of serving them better and providing a more comprehensive service to most of the hospital clients who were comparatively poor and required affordable health care.

Monsignor Twum Barima of the Koforidua Diocese of the Catholic Church, who chaired the function, also cut the tape to inaugurate the endoscopy unit.

The ceremony was attended by some of the Germany friends of the hospital who travelled to Ghana for the occasion.
