Military urged to hold regular durbars to discuss emerging concerns
Mr Mark Woyongo, Minister for Defence on Thursday urged military officers to hold regular durbars with other ranks to disabuse their minds of causing “unrest in the country.”
He said such durbars were “very necessary” in view of certain “provocative and outrageous reports in the media aimed at causing unrest in the country” and urged the military not to fall prey to such developments.
Mr Woyongo said this when he paid a day’s familiarization visit to the 66 Artillery Regiment (Volta Barracks) in Ho and interacted with Officers and men of the Regiment.
“As officers, I expect you to interact with other ranks regularly, try to address their challenges and help them understand what is happening in the country so that they don’t allow provocative and outrageous comments in the media move them to disquiet,” he said.
Mr Woyongo said the country had seen significant progress due to stability since 1992 and the need for all to protect the Constitution.
He said he did not think the court case challenging the legitimacy of President John Dramani Mahama could be a “recipe for chaos” because “we all believe in the court system…, no matter how the verdict goes we will all accept it.”
Mr Woyongo said it was important for the citizenry to protect the pride of Ghana “as an island of peace and democracy” and that there was need to protect the country’s democracy though there might be challenges.
He said government would continue to re-tool and motivate personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces which must reciprocate with loyalty.
Mr Woyongo also visited the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Volta Regional Hospital.
He commended doctors who were on duty at the hospitals and assured that the strike issue would soon be resolved.
Lieutenant Seidu Abass, Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, said collaborations between the Regiment and other security services was ensuring relative peace in the Volta Region.
He said the lack of accommodation and poor sewerage system were some major challenges facing the Regiment.
