Regional Minister pays tribute to Cuban Doctors Brigade
Alhaji Limuna Mohammed- Muniru, Upper East Regional Minister on Thursday paid tribute to the Cuban Doctors Brigade for contributing significantly to the health delivery system in the country.
He said the impact of the brigade is being felt by the country in “this trying moment when Government doctors and pharmacists are on strike”.
The Regional Minister gave the commendation at the 14th Cuban-Ghana Regional Medical Scientific Workshop held in Bolgatanga.
He said without the Cuban Doctors the health situation in the country would have worsened.
Dr Koku Awoonor –Williams, Regional Director of Ghana Health Service said Cuban Gynaecologists were providing emergency obstetric care in the area until 2007 when a Ghanaian Gynaecologist , Dr Peter Baffoe accepted posting to the Region.
He said from 2008 – 2009 Cuban Doctors successfully managed 540 emergency obstetric cases representing 50 per cent of the total cases.
“In 2008 and 2009 Cuban Gynaecologists…successfully managed 30 rapture uterus cases and conducted a study, which led to quality care improvement interventions in the West Mamprusi District in the Northern Region where most of the cases were reported,” Dr Awoonor-Williams said.
He urged the Regional Coordinating Council to help attract and retain doctors and other health personnel into the region.
