Mosquito control exercise intensifies in Upper West

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a waste management company, has intensified its routine spraying exercise to control the breeding of mosquitoes at places that are convenient for their breeding in the Upper West Region.

The company has noted that with the onset of the rainy season, many of the breeding sites of the mosquito, especially dried ponds, become collection points for water.

The stagnant water serves as suitable environment for the breeding of mosquitoes which cause malaria.

Mr Ezekiel Ayamga, Regional Vector Control Officer of Zoomlion, who spoke to media personnel after one of such spraying exercises in Wa, said the main aim of the spraying programme was to reduce the mosquito population and its related health problems.

He said stagnant water in areas such as ponds and slow moving streams were being sprayed with biological larvicide with both the larvae and the adult mosquito as the target.

Environmental management such as desilting of choked drains was also being undertaken to prevent the breeding of the insect.

The Company disinfected public toilets, refuse containers and dumping sites to destroy houseflies and other vectors of diseases to prevent the outbreak of deadly diseases like cholera.

Mr Ayamga said the public was also being educated on the harmful effects of the vectors and the measures to be adopted to mitigate these effects.

Mr Emmanuel Volsuuri, Upper West Regional Manager of Zoomlion, said the Company was determined to carry out the spraying exercise regularly in order to prevent the breeding of harmful insects with their associated health problems.
