Voting starts late in Kumbungu bye-election
Voting in the Kumbungu bye-election in the Northern Region, delayed in most of the polling stations due to late arrival of voting materials.
Elections started at about 0800 hours in most of the polling stations at a slow pace with the normal queues that characterize general elections missing, a sign of non-enthusiastic voting pattern.
Residents of Salamatu Alhassan and Napari Neena told the GNA that they were concentrating on their domestic chores such as fetching water and cooking before deciding to vote.
At about 0900 hours, 98 voters had cast their votes at the Kumbungu Kukuo DA Primary polling station out of 467 voters on the voter’s register.
The Kpukpaligu DA Primary polling station also had 42 persons voting at about 0845 hours out of 366 names on the register.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, told the GNA that adequate security measures had been put in place to deal with any lawlessness.
He said 300 police personnel have been deployed to the 74 polling stations across the constituency with two police officers per each polling station.
ASP Tetteh said that four patrol teams were also patrolling the constituency.
The Kumbungu bye-election became necessary after the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, the former Member of Parliament for the area, to take a new appointment as the General Secretary of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Groups of States.
The NPP has, however, boycotted the Kumbungu bye-elections.
