Goldfields’ Tarkwa mine to invest $3.6m in communities

Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa mine, has projected to invest $3.6 million (GH¢6.84 million) on its sustainable development projects for this year.

The projects, which have already been approved by the company, comprised Junior High School blocks, maternity unit, hostel, extension of small town water supply system and mechanized boreholes.

Others include tarring of roads, upgrading of community centres, renovation of primary school block, early childhood development centre, construction of bio-gas digesters, information communication centres as well as provision of refuse containers for schools within the catchment communities to assist sanitation conditions.

Beneficiary communities include Huni/Valley, Tebe, Pepesa, Brahabobom, New Atuabo, Akoon, Abekoase, Huniso and Tarkwa.

The Community Affairs Superintendent, Mr. Abdul Razak Yakubu said this in Tarkwa when the company held its quarterly consultative committee meeting.

It was attended by stakeholders from Tarkwa Nsueam and Prestea Huni/Valley constituencies.

He said all the 2012 projects, which did not begin had been pushed to this year, adding that the connection of electricity to the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipal education office for instance would commence this year.

The General Manager, Mr. Micheile Van De Merwe observed that though the company was going through lots of challenges they would continue to contribute towards the development of Ghana with the primary emphasis on their stakeholder communities.
