Ghanaian workers urged to build strong economy

Mr Charles Kwame Dondieu, Techiman Municipal Coordinating Director, on Wednesday called on Ghanaian workers to work hard to build a strong economy that would benefit pensioners.

He said a strong economy would establish the basis of a reliable pension, which would assure workers of a real income security.

Mr Dondieu made the remarks at this year’s May Day celebration in the Brong-Ahafo Region, at Techiman.

The event was marred by a heavy downpour and rainstorm, therefore, a makeshift arrangement was made for the dignitaries to address the 5,000 workers at the Techiman Methodist JHS Park.

The celebration was on the theme:” Pensions—It is Your Right and Your Responsibility”.

Mr Dondieu asked workers to renew their determination in building a country that would create work for all and sundry and ensure a decent income after retirement.

He said Ghana’s daunting task of her development agenda could not be achieved without the collective support and participation of workers.

Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, who read an address on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, expressed appreciation to the mutual co-operation existing between government and organised labour, irrespective of the tension and disagreements on the labour front.

He advised workers to work hard while the various labour unions negotiated with the government for better conditions of service.

Nana Owusu Gyare II, Akwamuhene of Techiman, appealed to government to improve on the welfare of workers.

He appealed to the striking doctors to rescind their decision and resort to dialogue with the government in the interest of the citizenry.

Nineteen workers were honoured with refrigerators, computer laptops and certificates.
