Two Ghanaian local players granted bail in assault case

Medeama duo, Samuel Enzemaba and Sampson Cudjoe have been granted bail following their assault on a police officer during their mid-week Premiership goalless meeting with Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi.

The two detained at the Kumasi Central Police Station on Wednesday evening have been released pending police investigation. .

Superintendent Julius Kpekpebbison, Commander in-charge of Operations at the Ashanti Regional Police Command told GNA Sports on Thursday, the police had officially taken statements of the two players.

“We are investigating the circumstances under which the police personnel were assaulted in order for the law to take its own course”.

He said Cudjoe punched an on duty police officer in the face after he made an attempt to intervene while the former engaged Kotoko’s Michael Akuffo in a scuffle in the tunnel during recess.

The officer drew the attention of the Match Commissioner to the incident and subsequently arrested Cudjoe after the match.

“As the match ended and we moved in to effect the arrest, the two players resisted vehemently and in the process pounced on two of our men injuring them in the process”.

Information pieced together by GNA Sports indicates it took the intervention of Kotoko’s Executive Board Chairman Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong and officials of Medeama to get the players bailed.

There was pandemonium after the game with supporters of Kotoko pelting referee Silas Okine with sachet water after he survived a chase on his life. He was taken hostage for about two hours after the match having been rescued by a police reinforcement team.
