UG starts construction of School of Veterinary Medicine
Professor Ernest Aryeetey Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana on Thursday cut the sod for the construction of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the academic facility.
The facility is aimed at developing human resources and capabilities in the area of veterinary practice, animal production and healthcare at the university.
Construction works have commenced on the constituent of the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS) of the University of Ghana.
Prof Aryeetey explained that the school, being housed currently in the CACS started in 2009 using the existing facilities in the Department of Animal Science for lectures and practical classes for their basic and paraclinical components of the training.
The school will run a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme and Small and Large Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital would be part of it to deal with mainly pets and large animals such as horses and food animals.
The Vice Chancellor expressed the University’s determination to assist the school to overcome its challenges.
Prof George Kwame Aning Acting Dean of the School traced the efforts to establish the School to the 1980s.
He noted that the school would provide amenities for imparting practical, critical skills and knowledge in disease diagnosis and management.
He said he was thrilled about the possibility of training veterinary surgeons locally and the boosting of research in the area of Veterinary Medicine as well.
The project will be completed in eight months.
