Residents want security agencies to make Kumasi metropolis safe
Some residents of the Kumasi metropolis said they were enveloped in apprehension and fear, following recent unresolved murders and armed robberies.
They expressed concern about the security situation and demanded firm and decisive action by the police to rein in the criminals and make the metropolis safe.
The residents said they were worried that in less than a week, four people had been gunned down under strange circumstances, which had kept them wondering about what was going on.
On Wednesday, May 8, two people, Kwadwo Asamoah, alias “Gausu” and Victor Ocran, were shot and killed in broad daylight at Ashtown, Kumasi, by unknown assassins.
In the night of that same day, Alexander Oduro, a student of the Kumasi Polytechnic, was also murdered at Atonsu.
Just last Saturday, at about 230 hours, another person, Prince Owusu Antoh, died from the assassin’s bullets at Dark City Pub at Dichemso.
Some residents, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said they were afraid to go out in the night, especially to the drinking spots and food joints.
Baffour Kyei, resident of Krofroum, said he did not understand why criminals were imposing a reign of terror in Kumasi.
“The other time they brazenly took to the streets at the Tech-Junction and Ayigya, firing into the air to send people fleeing and now they are shooting us like fowls”, he added.
Dennis Agyarko, a home appliances dealer at Adum, told GNA that “my brother I am scared, it could be anybody’s turn at any time”.
He pleaded with the police and other security agencies to provide the people with protection, saying: “There is the need to intensify day and night patrols.”
Ms Vera Ama Achiaa, a student, asked the police to go after the felons and bring them to justice.
The violent crimes are not limited to only Kumasi, but places like Obuasi, Bekwai, Konongo are having a fair share of the tragedy.
Ms Achiaa made reference to the murder incident at Mamiriwa, near Obuasi allegedly committed by Chinese illegal miners on May 8.
She also lamented that the raid of the Modem Filling Station at Santasi by robbers at dawn on Monday, in which they assaulted the attendants and blotted with about GH¢6,500.00.
Ms Achiaa said: “the overall picture is scary. The police should go beyond issuing press statements and arrest the offenders”.
