Fisherman jailed 10 years for possessing narcotic drugs
A Takoradi Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced a 44 year-old fisherman, Kwesi Essilfie, to ten years imprisonment for unlawful possession of narcotic drugs.
The accused pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Fuseini Yakubu told the court presided over by Mr. Justice Kwesi Boakye that Essilfie, who was serving a three year jail term, escaped from lawful custody on May 30, 2012, at Sekondi but was re-arrested on February 26, 2013.
He said the accused was arrested by Officers of the Police Drug Law Enforcement Unit on May 31, 2011 upon a tip-off at Aboadze, near Sekondi.
Inspector Yakubu added that, officers of Unit mobilised and proceeded to Essilfie’s house where 56 wrappers and two parcels of dried leaves suspected to be indian hemp were found after a search.
He said the accused claimed ownership of the dried leaves and mentioned one Ocran as his supplier but was unable to lead the Police to Ocran.
Inspector Yakubu said the leaves were sent to the Police Forensic Unit for examination and were found to be cannabis.
He said Essilfie was charged after further investigations.
