Traders say foodstuff prices generally stable

Prices of some common foodstuffs, generally have been stable over the last four months in some markets in Accra, traders at the Lapaz new market and the Tema Stations have stated.

The traders told the Ghana News Agency on Friday that there had not been significant changes in food prices for items such as rice, cooking oil, and cassava and corn dough, and tubers of yam.

Aunty Felicia said since January the price of a mini bag of rice had gone up by only GH¢1.00 depending on the brand. A mini bag of rice with brands such as Royal Feast, Sultana, and Uncle Sam sells between GH¢15 and GH¢18.

Mama Akos, who sells tubers of yam at Tema Station, in Accra, said depending on the size, a tuber of yam could be sold for GH¢3.00 while three or four bigger tubers are sold for GH¢10.

According to Yaa Ofori, a vegetable seller, a medium sized paint bucket of tomatoes is being sold at GH¢10 while ten pieces could be bought at GH¢1.00.

Prices of other vegetables like onions, pepper, okro, and green leafy vegetables have also seen very little upward adjustments.

“You can get pepper, onion or Kontonmire at even fifty pesewas” Madam Afi,” a vegetable seller at Abeka-Lapaz new market had said.

Kojo Otoo, a customer who was at the Lapaz new market to buy food items expressed satisfaction at the prices of the food stuffs and added: “This is Ghana for you, the prices are quite okay, but I won’t be surprised if I come back next week to see these items at doubled prices.”
