Ghana security agencies destroy equipment for illegal mining
Security personnel have destroyed a number of equipment illegal small scale miners (Galamsey operators), are using for their activities at the banks of the Bonsa River in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality, in the Western Region.
The 65 personnel were drawn from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service and Bureau of National Investigations.
The equipment which were destroyed include 11 dredging machines, four pumping machines, 22 chanfan machines and two generators.
The Divisional Police Commander in Tarkwa, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Paul Ayitey disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.
He said the operation was led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs Christina Kobinah to stop the pollution of the river by the galamsey operators.
No arrest was made as the operators took to their heels when they spotted the security personnel.
ACP Ayitey said the operation was also in line with the President’s directive to eliminate the activities of illegal miners across the nation.
He appealed to traditional rulers, unit committee members, members of parliament, municipal and district chief executives and the public to inform the police about illegal mining activities.
