NCCE educates public on Supreme Court ruling

supreme courtThe Birim South District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has embarked on a series of activities to prepare the minds of the public for the impending ruling of the Supreme Court.

Mr Stephen Agyei Yeboah, District Director of the Commission, said at an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting at Akim Swedru.

Mr Yeboah said Ghana was not yet out of its election problems and urged the members of the campaign not to relax in their efforts to educate Ghanaians on the need to accept the Supreme Court ruling in good faith.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahmoud Bawumia, his running mate and Mr Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, NPP National Chairman have filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging the results declared by the Electoral Commission on the presidential election held in December.

The District Director said Ghanaians should not be deceived by the prevailing peace, as the nation is sitting on a time bomb due to the petition before the Supreme Court.

“It can trigger violence especially if people are not circumspect in their utterances and deeds,” he said.

Mr Yeboah said the NCCE was not taking the ruling on the petition lightly hence the series of meetings and talks on why people must accept the ruling and had even gone to the extent of organising indoor and outdoor games between the supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and NPP to unite them.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Simpson Abotsi, the Akim Swedru District Commander of Police, commended the IPDC which was formed in the run-up to the 2012 general election for the good work they are doing.

“All is not yet over, we have the ruling of the Supreme Court ahead of us which we must all strive in making it violence free,” the Police Commander said.

DSP Abotsi expressed concern about commentaries some supporters of the two parties have been making on the proceedings at the Supreme Court which often ended up in heated arguments and appealed to the judges and the Chief Justice to a find means to prevent such commentaries.

“Since the nation can only develop in peace, we must all try to avoid things which do not promote peace,” he appealed.

The meeting was attended by chiefs, the clergy, assembly members, academia, BNI, Muslims, the Police and the youth.
