Anti-corruption group applauds Martin Amidu

The Bureau for Internal Affairs, (BIA), an anti-corruption organisation, has commended Mr Martin Amidu, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice over his sole and successful campaign against the payment of Judgement Debts.

Mr Mohammed Frimpong, Executive Secretary of BIA told the Ghana News Agency in Accra at the weekend that through Mr Amidu’s selfless efforts the nation can retrieve about 25 million Euros from Waterville BV Holdings as judgement debt.

He said the former Minister has won the day for integrity in public service even though he underwent what might look like “his dismissal as Attorney General under a government he served with loyalty and sought to defend in the fight against corruption”.

“He forewent personal privileges as a minister and went ahead to get the money paid back to Ghana.”

Mr Frimpong said Mr Amidu sacrificed his image and that of his family in his efforts and even became “ a laughing stock”.

He asked other public servants to emulate his singular role to achieve the much touted policy of probity and accountability in governance in order to help the nation to reduce corruption to the barest minimum.

Waterville was contracted by the Kufuor Administration over stadia projects for the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2008) Stadia Projects.

Isofoton, a South African firm and Mr Alfred Woyome, a Ghanaian Businessman, have been paid huge amounts of money under the CAN 2008 projects, which Mr Amidu is disputing in court.
